Ava DuVernay, born August 24, 1972, in Long Beach California. DuVernay was encouraged to pursue her love of art by her aunt Denise as a young kid. DuVernay worked as a night nurse to allow her mother the space she required during the day for the love of art, literature, and theatre. DuVernay was a fan of the movie West Side Story, which she showed her. DuVernay realized that art could be a powerful tool to promote social activism. Her mother was also a the social sensitivity and taught DuVernay how to convey messages through artwork. DuVernay resided in Compton during the majority of her life, but spent every summer in the company of her father's extended family living in Lowndes County Alabama. DuVernay's father recalled watching the historical civil rights marches through the Edmund Pettus Bridge in the adjacent city of Selma Alabama. The time spent in Selma, Alabama during the summer, would later inspire her to make a film about Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. as well as his Civil Rights Movement. DuVernay graduated from Saint Joseph High School Lakewood California, in 1990. She went to the University of California Los Angeles for a degree in English and African American Studies. DuVernay developed an interest in broadcast journalism as a student. DuVernay was a CBS News intern during the O.J. Simpson trial. DuVernay recalls being tasked to watch the home of a member of the jury as well as examine their junk. Her tasks to accomplish left her unsatisfied and, following her decision not to pursue a career in journalism, she moved on into the industry of publicity. DuVernay got a job right from college, working as a new publicist at a studio. Her private PR company, The DuVernay Agency was established in 1999.
